Why Does My AC Turn On and Off Every Few Minutes?
Short cycling is when an air conditioner starts and stops every few minutes instead of running a steady cycle. It matters because starting is the hardest thing a compressor does — a short-cycling system wears out years early and uses more electricity while cooling less. The usual causes are an oversized system, a restricted coil, a low charge, or a thermostat placed somewhere misleading.
Why an oversized system cycles
An air conditioner that is too large for the house cools the air to setpoint before it has run long enough to pull humidity out, then shuts off. The house feels cold and clammy, and the system starts again minutes later. This is the most common cause we find, and it traces back to equipment chosen by rule of thumb rather than a load calculation.
The other three causes
- A dirty filter or coil, which drives the system into a safety limit and shuts it down early
- A low refrigerant charge, which trips the pressure switch
- A thermostat in direct sun, above a lamp, or on a wall shared with a kitchen — it reads a temperature the rest of the house is not at
What it costs you to ignore
Compressors are rated in starts, not just hours. A system short cycling through a San Diego County summer can lose several years of service life, and you pay for the inrush current on every one of those starts.
