The trade-off in one paragraph

Denser media catches smaller particles and resists airflow more. Your system was designed to move a certain volume of air against a certain resistance. Exceed it and you lose airflow, which costs you both comfort and efficiency, and in the worst case freezes the evaporator coil.

Thickness matters more than people expect

A thicker filter — where the equipment has a cabinet for one — has far more surface area, so it can capture more while resisting airflow less. That is usually a better route to cleaner air than forcing a very dense one-inch filter into a slot built for a basic one.

How often to change it

• Check it monthly during heavy use; that habit matters more than any fixed schedule
• Change sooner with pets, during a long pollen stretch, or after any smoke event
• Change sooner during construction or remodelling anywhere in the house
• If it looks loaded, it is loaded — the calendar does not overrule what you can see

Fit and direction

A filter that does not seal in its slot lets air bypass it entirely, which makes the rating irrelevant. Filters also have an airflow direction arrow that should point toward the blower. Both are common and easy mistakes.
