Should I Repair or Replace My AC?

Question one: how old is it?

Residential air conditioners generally give ten to fifteen years of service, and coastal installations often sit at the lower end of that because salt air is hard on outdoor coils and cabinets. Under eight years, repair is usually right. Past twelve, a major component failure usually is not worth it.

Question two: what failed?

• Capacitor, contactor, or a control board — wear parts, repair them
• Blower or condenser fan motor — repairable, worth weighing against age
• Evaporator or condenser coil leak — expensive, and on an older system usually points to replacement
• Compressor — the most expensive part; past about twelve years this is normally a replacement conversation

Question three: how often has it failed?

Two service calls in one season is a pattern, not bad luck. A system that keeps failing is telling you its remaining life is short, and money spent on it does not carry forward.

Question four: what do the numbers say?
