Why Do My Vents Smell Musty?
A musty or dirty-sock smell that appears when the air conditioner starts is usually biological growth on the evaporator coil or in the condensate pan. The coil is cold, wet and dark whenever the system runs, which is a good environment for it. The fix is cleaning the coil and drain and correcting whatever is keeping them wet.
Why the coil grows things
The evaporator coil condenses moisture out of your air by design. If that water does not drain away completely, or the coil surface is coated in dust that holds moisture, growth follows. The smell is strongest in the first minute of a cycle because that is when air first moves across it.
What actually fixes it
- Cleaning the evaporator coil properly, not just replacing the filter
- Clearing and treating the condensate drain and pan
- Correcting a unit that is not level, so the pan actually drains
- Better filtration so less dust reaches the coil in the first place
- UV treatment at the coil in cases where growth keeps returning
Other smells worth naming
- A burning or hot-dust smell in the first heating cycle of the season is usually dust burning off and should fade within an hour
- A persistent burning smell is not normal — shut the system off
- A rotten-egg smell means gas: leave and call the utility from outside
- A sharp chemical smell can indicate a refrigerant leak and should be diagnosed
