R-454B & A2L: What the Refrigerant Change Means for You
If you've been told your refrigerant is being 'phased out', here's the practical version — what it means for a system you're keeping, and what it means for one you're replacing.
The short version
New residential equipment has moved to A2L refrigerants, of which R-454B is the common one. We install current A2L/R-454B systems, and we still service existing R-410A systems.
If you're keeping your current system
Your R-410A system doesn't stop working and doesn't become unserviceable the day new equipment ships with something else. We continue to service R-410A. What does tend to happen over time with any superseded refrigerant is that servicing it gets less convenient as supply and demand shift — which is worth factoring in if your system is already old and you're weighing a major repair.
If you're replacing
You'll be looking at A2L equipment, and that's fine — it's what's being manufactured. The install has its own handling and safety requirements, which is a reason to care that whoever does the work is licensed and trained on current equipment. Our technicians hold EPA 608 certification.
Watch out for pressure tactics
'Your refrigerant is illegal' and 'you have to replace immediately' are sales lines, not facts. If someone tells you that, get a second opinion. We'll give you one free.
