Why Does My Breaker Trip When the AC Runs?

What is drawing the extra current

• A weak run capacitor, so the compressor or fan motor struggles to start and pulls high current for longer
• A compressor going into locked rotor — trying to start against internal resistance and failing
• A condenser coil so dirty the system runs at high head pressure, raising amperage across the whole cycle
• Corroded or loose connections at the outdoor disconnect, which is common near the coast
• A genuinely undersized or aged breaker that no longer holds its rating

Why repeated resets are a bad idea

Each reset sends full current back into a fault. If the problem is a compressor pulling locked-rotor amps, you are cooking the windings a little more each time. A repair that was a capacitor can become a compressor, and a compressor on an older system usually means replacement.

What we check

We measure actual amp draw against the equipment's rated load, test the capacitor under load rather than just visually, and inspect the disconnect and wiring. That tells us whether you have a wear part, a failing compressor, or an electrical issue outside the HVAC system.
